HAZEL DELL, Wash. -- A pedestrian critically injured after being hit by a speeding car near Vancouver is recovering from his injuries.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Annastasia Morrison of Vancouver, was speeding on Highway 99 southbound just after 3 p.m. when the car she was in crossed into oncoming traffic near 72nd Street, according to Sgt. Fred Nieman of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Reilly, 21, was walking or standing on the north side of the street and was struck by the car.

Hospital staff and a trauma surgeon explained Friday they were able to stabilize him, but that he remained on a ventilator in critical condition after suffering a severe head injury and several broken bones.

”Joseph is fighting, hanging on, surrounded by family from all over who love him immeasurably,” his cousin Aaron Hahn said. “We know he’s strong and we will be strong for him and with him.”

The car then went off the road and into the parking lot of the nearby shop. It collided with two beams that were supporting a sign outside the shop, and the top of the car was peeled off, Nieman said. Morrison was killed on impact. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.

"A big smash," said witness Jeff Pierson.  "Sounded like someone totaled a car, which they obviously did."

"It was just a big crash, something booming, like a bomb or something," witness Alex Villanueva added.

The cause of the crash was being investigated. There is no evidence the two people knew each other.

A benefit fund for Reilly has been set up at Twinstar Credit Union.
