SPOKANE-- Local law enforcement says a new jail won't solve Spokane County's crime problems. Friday they spent the day sharing ideas at the "Smart Justice Symposium" in hopes of leaving with some concrete changes.
Spokane elected leaders and those from all sides of the criminal justice system spent the day discussing alternatives to incarceration. Professionals from across the state presented alternatives to jail that are already proving to be successful in other places.
The majority of the county's budget goes into the criminal justice system. The organizers of the conference say by changing the way we spend that money, we might finally start to see a reduction in crime.
