This date was 150 years in the making. Oregon United States Senator and Union Army Civil War Colonel Edward Dickinson Baker is memorialized with his own day in Oregon, now an annual celebration of his life and defense of the Union during the first months of the American Civil War.
On Friday, February 24, 2012, the first annual Edward Dickinson Baker Day was inaugurated with a dignified ceremony and special events held at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. This video shows the morning event with the Civil War re-enactment of the "Posting of the Colors" by the Sons of Union Reserve Color Guard to start the legislative session for the day.
The photographs are of Senator Edward Dickinson Baker, the Sons of Veterans Color Guard and the ceremony at the Medal of Honor memorial honoring the four Civil War Medal of Honor recipients buried in Oregon. Henceforth, every February 24 is "Edward Dickinson Baker Day" in Oregon, a fitting honor given to Oregon's Statesman and Soldier during the national observance of the Civil War 150th Anniversary.
