I am the author of the new national release Brain Farts: The Love Story, a humorous and heartwarming tale of mystery, intrigue and murder. I live in Spokane Washington and I am among the fastest growing number of authors across the country who are doing battle with major publishers by having our works published exclusively as eBooks by online booksellers & publishing houses such as Barnes and Noble for their nook series, Amazon’s Kindle, and all other brands of eReaders—through an industry file standard that is universal.
It is, by necessity, becoming the new natural order that will one day outsell books in print and sooner than one might think possible. With free apps for PC, tablets and smart phones, books are now more portable, accessible, and downloadable than ever, from nearly every corner of the world. Students can carry whole libraries, including their textbooks, in one light weight device they can take with them everywhere.
Because of the increasing costs of publishing, author advances and agent fees, far fewer books are being published for print; and then, only by established, celebrity, or notorious authors. To combat this sad erosion of American Literature, online publishers are affording new and unknown authors the opportunity to publish their books right alongside these so-called “big-tickets”. With more than 2,000,000 eBooks available online by Barnes and Noble alone—and this does not include the number of other electronic publishers and booksellers worldwide—eBooks costs far less to publish, market, or provide a copy of the print version electronically and as such we, the consumers, reap the rewards.
There will always be books in print: at least I sincerely hope so. But it is good to know that right now there is an alternative for new writers, one without all the insurmountable obstacles for a new writer, and one that makes reader choices more abundant and affordable.
