AUBURN, Wash. – Two lanes of westbound State Route 18 near Auburn re-opened today at 5 a.m. after being shut down all weekend due to landslides.
Two landslides closed the lanes Thursday evening in Peasley Canyon, between West Valley Highway and Weyerhaeuser Way South. It started out as a small slide, then a second larger slide brought 1,500 cubic yards of mud, trees, rock and debris across all the westbound lanes. The slides caused westbound drivers to find alternate routes and slowed eastbound traffic.
Crews worked for several days to stabilize the hillside, clear debris and build a 6-ft. retaining wall. They cut trees and created a drainage ditch. Overnight Monday they re-striped the lanes and opened two lanes to traffic.
The far right westbound lane will remain closed for the next couple of months while crews finish their work to completely stabilize the hillside. WSDOT say drivers should expect some delays.
