EVERETT, Wash. -- Red Cross volunteers are heading to the Midwest and South to help families affected by the deadly tornadoes. The national Red Cross is still requesting help from local chapters as the need increases.

So far, 136 people from Washington state have been deployed and many are still packing their bags.

Martha Read of Snohomish is planning to stay in the disaster zone for an entire month. She was told she was going to go, but she still waits to learn exactly where she will be stationed to provide emotional counseling.

"It's a very hard thing for people to have to cope with over there," she said. "That's why mental health professionals help people manage through that time until they're able to go back to their homes."

The need is so great KING 5 will be activating Northwest Response on Thursday as a way to make giving easier. You can also donate directly to the Red Cross.
