BANKS -- Firefighters from Banks and Forest Grove used a boat Wednesday to help free a doe stuck in the middle of a partially frozen pond.

The deer report came in about 10 a.m. off NW Hoffer Road. When crews arrived, the deer was in a hole in the ice where the owner said the water was about six feet deep.

An attempt to cross the ice with a rescue board frightened the deer. A rescue boat was launched, acting as an icebreaker to clear a path for the deer to swim to shore.

On the bank, the deer rested for a few minutes then disappeared into the timbered hillsides.
