BONNEY LAKE, Wash. --  Not long after Bonney Lake Police got a report of children walking out onto the crusty ice covering Lake Tapps, public information officer Todd Green got busy writing a news release.

“It’s better to talk to reporters now instead of after a tragedy happens,” said Green.

The ice looks thick enough to support people, but Green warned it cannot be trusted.

Green said it is rapidly melting now that the cold spell is over and he wants anyone who sees someone venturing out on the ice to call police.

Locals who live around the lake know the danger and have taught their children to stay off, but visitors may not know how big and deep the lake is and fragile a thin coating of ice can be.
