BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A forecast of warm clear weather prompted Bellingham Christian School to cancel classes today for a "sun day."

Principal Bob Sampson says sun day celebrates spring, promotes positive school culture and is "just for fun."

Because the school lost no days to snow over the winter, the principal says it can afford to take a spring day off.

"You know in Washington we take days off for those snow days and we love the sunshine up here in the north and if we take it off for snow days and if we don’t have any snow days in the winter why not take it off for a sun day and enjoy?" said Sampson.

A posting on the school's Web page says, "Good morning students, parents and staff. Yes, It's a Sun Day! Wahooo. That's right, school is CANCELLED today due to good weather! Enjoy!"

Sampson said parents were surveyed and they thought it was a great idea.

"It's a great way to create some positive school culture and of course kids love it and several teachers like it too," said Sampson.

Child care will still be provided at the school for parents who need it.
