SPOKANE -- A Spokane County jury convicted a Spokane man of abusing and torturing his 4-year-old daughter to death.

30-year-old Jonathan Lytle showed no emotion as jurors announced the verdict, which came after only four hours of deliberations. Lytle was found guilty of homicide by abuse in the death of Summer Phelps. The girl was beaten, bitten, burned and denied food for long periods before she died on March 10, 2007.

It only took jurors four hours to reach their decision after 30-year-old Jonathan Lytle's two-week trial.

Jurors also found Lytle guilty on three aggravating factors: that he used deliberate cruelty, that the victim was especially vulnerable and that Lytle had a position of trust and authority that he used to carry out the crimes.

Lytle faces up to life in prison.

Testimony in the trial lasted a week and a half. The prosecution's final witness was Spokane County Medical Examiner Sally Aiken, who described the horrific details of her autopsy report. Aiken told jurors she observed 140 bruises and 106 abrasions on Summer Phelps's scalp where her hair had been ripped out.

Defense attorneys offered no resistance, and instead say Lytle's wife is responsible for Summer's abuse. Adriana Lytle has already pleaded guilty and faces at least 20 years in prison.

Summer's death generated outrage across the community and is, in part, responsible for the formation of "Our Kids, Our Business"-- a program to raise awareness of child abuse.
