Oregon hit-and-run victim recalls crash

01:00 PM PDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008

By TERESA BLACKMAN / KGW.com

WEST LINN, Ore. -- The owner of the Mercedes that police believe struck a man who was trying to change a flat tire along I-205 Wednesday morning voluntarily went to the police station and spoke to investigators.

Police have not yet released the suspect's name but said he drove his Mercedes to the West Linn police station after seeing reports about the hit-and-run crash on television. Sgt. Neil Hennelly said investigators examined the car and it had damage that matched the evidence collected at the scene of the crash.

No arrests have been made at this time. The owner of the Mercedes did not admit that he was driving when the crash occurred so police were trying to figure out who was behind the wheel, or whether they could prove it was him.

The victim, Glen Ridderbush, 57, said the Mercedes hit him while he was trying to change a flat tire along Interstate-205 at about 2 a.m.

This is the Mercedes that was seized as evidence.

"He hit me on the right and side and... he hit the gravel and took off," Ridderbush told KGW, from his hospital bed at Oregon Health and Science University.

Two workers at a nearby shopping center heard the crash and Ridderbush’s screams for help and called 9-1-1.

Riderbush was transported by ambulance to OHSU for treatment of a broken foot and broken toes. He will undergo surgery on Friday.

Investigators said he found two pieces of silver, body-side molding with a chrome strip imbedded in them that likely came from the car which hit Ridderbush.

Anyone with information that may help in the investigation was urged to call police at 503-655-6214.
