More sharp spikes found in Green Lake

SEATTLE – Divers at Green Lake found two more sharp spikes in the water this week, bringing the total number of spikes discovered to nearly 50.
They say there could be even more.
The water remains closed to swimmers as divers continue their search.
No one knows how long the spikes have been in the water or who could have put them there.
They were planted in the lake and they appear to have been deliberately sharpened.
"They were a little rusted," said Seattle resident Bob Marks-Nichols. "But it was obvious that the tips had been filed to a point."
Pat Boltz was the first to find the spikes. He was at the lake with his family when he stepped on a metal spike buried in the shoreline under water.
"It took maybe a minute or a minute and half to find like 10 more," he said.
He called the Parks Department who sent Harbor Patrol to search that end of the lake. They found 43 more spikes, all suspiciously buried with the points upward.
The area where they were found is filled with kids, dogs and kayakers.

The spikes are up to 2 feet long and seem to be machine-sharpened at the ends.
"Kayakers fall in all the time; my kids falls in occasionally," said Nick Roux. "It seems very dangerous."
Authorities believe the spikes may have been there about two months, but Boltz was the first to report injury.
But there could have been others.
"30 or 40 kids in the water every day, and you want to think you're in a nice safe place in Seattle, not a place where they can get nailed," said Eric Hughes, Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club.
