ALBANY, Ore. -- A pickup truck crashed into a vehicle stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 5 near Albany Monday night and one person was killed, police said.
Spanaway, Washington resident died Monday afternoon when the pickup he was riding in struck a parked box truck parked on the shoulder of Interstate 5 about eight miles south of Albany. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers investigating the fatal crash are looking at fatigue as a contributing factor.
Broam Stewart, 20, of Graham, Wash. fell asleep at the wheel just before 5 p.m. near milepost 223 and the pickup drifted across the northbound lanes and into the truck stopped on the right shoulder, according to OSP Trooper Casey Hunter. Then, the pickup flipped and came to rest on the east shoulder.
A passenger in the pickup, Daniel Riedstra, 19, of Spanaway, Wash. died at the scene.
Stewart was also injured and flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. But authorities said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Both Stewart and Riedstra were wearing seat belts. They were on their way home to Washington after visiting Riedstra’s relatives in California.
