TACOMA, Wash. An event providing hundreds of low-income Tacoma children with free backpacks and school supplies was so popular last year, organizers planned to expand this year.

But unless major donors come forward soon, fewer students will benefit.

I can t imagine having a child come up to me and saying this is what we need and we don t have their need, said Makena Quinn, organizer of the Tacoma Back to School Backpacks.

Last year s event provided 1,600 students with backpacks and supplies, but many more children had lined up for the giveaway.

Organizers were able to get 7,500 backpacks donated this year from Tacoma s Life Center Church.

Finding donations to pay for filling the packs has not been as easy.

The Tacoma School District donated $6,000 for supplies, but the organizers say without another $60,000 they ll only be able to fill 300 of the backpacks.

I just think sometimes we don t realize there s a need beyond ourselves, said Quinn.
