State legislators are asking the governor to overhaul the upper levels of management of the Washington state ferry system. One lawmaker says the discovery of a ferry worker who was a registered sex offender is just another sign of systemic personnel problems.
The ferry system has so far answered very few questions about the case.
We know behind that stonewall is a dysfunctional personnel system, said State Representative Larry Seaquist of Bremerton. That headquarters is a giant self-licking ice cream cone.
Seaquist, a retired warship commander, says 85 percent of his constituents ride the ferry. He believes Steven Dailey's employment is just another sign of bad upper management in the ferry system.
Over the last few years, KING 5 investigators exposed millions of wasted tax dollars, lack of oversight, and a culture of gaming the system to boost salaries.
Seaquist and Representative Norma Smith of Whidbey Island became so frustrated, they wrote a letter to Governor Jay Inslee last month, saying a major overhaul of WSF upper management is necessary to restore public trust.
Drives us nuts, said Seaquist, that complete lack of a sense of accountability. It's public money, those are public employees.
On Tuesday, WSDOT says it needs to complete an internal review of the Dailey matter before releasing any more information.
Passengers hope the answers aren't too far off on the horizon.
I think a certain amount of time can go by, but they owe the news and the public the story of what exactly happened for everybody's benefit, said Janice Grimm of Bremerton.
