CANBY, Ore. -- Firefighters were finally successful in figuring out how to help a llama stuck in the mud in Canby Tuesday night.

The 14-year-old llama, named Sgt. Pepper, got stuck in the edge of a muddy creek bed along Central Point Road.

He was found late Tuesday afternoon by his owner, who called dispatchers for help.

Sgt. Pepper's owner said it did not look like the llama was suffering, but he could not get out on his own. Crews were able to get him out of the mud -- with a little help from his friends, and some tranquilizers -- just after 6 p.m.
