Sheriff s investigators say a child custody dispute was the motive for the shooting death of a Shelton mother in her home last week.

Barbara Michelle Barbie Giles, 30, was shot Nov. 21 when she answered her door at 3:30 a.m.

Three people were arrested Thursday, according to the Mason County Sheriff s Office: A 37-year-old Shelton man who is the victim s ex-husband, his 16-year-old daughter and the girl s 18-year-old boyfriend from Des Moines.

KING 5 News typically does not name suspects until they are formally charged. They could be charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said at least one of Giles four children was fathered by her ex-husband, but the 16-year-old was not one of them.

Investigators say cell phone records show the 37-year-old had texted his daughter as early as Nov. 15, making plans to kill the victim. Byrd said it appeared some of the texts were in code, using innocuous phrases to disguise what they were planning.

Detectives believe the girl s boyfriend was the shooter and that the father provided him with the gun. They suspect the two teens went to the house while the father stayed behind.

When Giles answered the door, detectives said the teens forced the door open and the 18-year-old shot Giles multiple times.

Two witnesses inside of the house barricaded themselves in the rear of the house and were not injured.

The 16-year-old suspect is four months pregnant.
