Police shot a man who showed up with a hostage and a weapon at the Washington State Employees Credit Union on Bridgeport Way in Lakewood.
A video shot by a witness shows the chaos that unfolded outside the bank as a hostage situation went on inside. Police say the man held about 10 people hostage.
As police and SWAT officers arrived they tried to figure out what the man's motivation was.
The initial call had something to do with somebody reporting someone inside the bank with a gun, it wasn't clear if it was a robbery or what was going on, said Lt. Jeff Alwine.
Officers got on a bullhorn and tried to talk the man out. Eric Horstch could hear everything they were yelling.
You don't want to do this, let's make this out OK, more and more cop cars were arriving on the scene, he said.
A man and his two granddaughters were able to get out. Hortsch brought them inside his coffee and yogurt stand as police continued their work.
I asked what was happening and he said somebody said 'gun!, gun!' and he grabbed his two granddaughters and tried to get out of there and they had to go past the suspect, said Hortsch.
Police say the suspect kept his gun pointed to the head of one woman - the two know each other - and eventually officers saw an opportunity to put an end to the situation.
The suspect did appear in the doorway with a hostage and a gun officers were in fear of the hostage's safety so they shot the suspect, said Alwine.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital No one else was hurt.
