PORTLAND Spotty snow flurries were expected throughout Tuesday in the Portland Metro area and some flakes may stick to area roads, meteorologists warned.

The air mass moving in is trying to moderate our temperatures and is actually showing some warmer air around the 2,000 foot mark. That means we may see some isolated pockets of light freezing rain as well, which means liquid precipitation that instantly freezes to some surfaces, said KGW Meteorologist Nick Allard. The moisture should taper off Tuesday afternoon, with temperatures staying around or just below freezing.

Temperatures were expected to reach a high of 30 Tuesday afternoon.

As cold conditions continued, some schools shut down for the day while others closed early.

The recent cold weather snap may be connected to one death in Longview Wash., police said Monday. A woman found outside her retirement home Thursday morning died of hypothermia, investigators said.

The coldest night of this cold snap came overnight Saturday with temperatures at Portland International Airport dipping down to 13 degrees.

In Salem, temperatures were as low as 8 degrees, but that was nothing compared with Eugene, which saw -10 degrees, coming within 2 degrees of a record low.

The freezing weather caused water pipes to rupture around the Portland metro area Sunday afternoon, with hundreds of calls coming into dispatchers for help.

The arctic air blast followed a wild weather pattern Friday that brought a dusting of snow to the Metro area, anywhere from1 to 2 inches in Southwest Washington, and the Oregon Coast, and all the way up to 9 inches in Albany and Corvallis.
