SPOKANE -- Neighbors and loved ones of the elderly woman who died in a house fire late Friday spent Saturday cleaning up.

Firefighters were called to the home on Smith Street between Francis and Bruce around 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Many neighbors tried to rescue the 91-year-old woman who lived there, but the flames proved too difficult to save her. The victim had lived in the home since the 1940s.

Neighbors tried to fight the fire with a garden hose, but the home suffered significant damage. Much of the damage most of was contained to the top section of the house.

It was tragic. It was just devastating. Still, it doesn't feel real. Even though you know that she's gone and you're cleaning up the mess. It just - it doesn't seem real, said Wendy Hutsell, who lives next door.

The woman lived alone. Firefighters and the woman s son found her in the kitchen.

A medical examiner had not released an official cause of death Saturday evening.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
