CNN - A child rapist thought to be in Eastern Washington has been arrested in Virginia. Eric Eugene Hartwell, 51, was taken into custody Friday morning in Norfolk.

U.S. Marshals say they found him in a motel where Hartwell refused to open the door. The Marshals broke down the door to take him into custody.

The 51-year-old cut off his monitoring bracelet and walked away from a Denver halfway house last Friday. He has previous arrests in Washington for child rape in 1991 in Snohomish County and attempting to sexually assault a hitchhiker in 1996 in Skagit County. He also cut off a GPS bracelet in 2009 in Washington.

There were reports he was in Cheney, Wash. on Thursday. Eastern Washington University sent a text alert to students after Hartwell reportedly was seen in town and on campus.The sighting was never confirmed.
