ORTING, Wash. -- The family of Michael Compton, 53, is pleading with the community to help find his killer.

Compton was shot to death in his front lawn in Orting early Wednesday in the 500 block of Ford Lane SW. Compton, who grew up in that same house, died of a shotgun wound to the head, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner s Office.

Friday, family and friends posted Crime Stoppers flyers throughout town offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that could lead to an arrest.

Someone knows something, said Casey Smith, Compton's brother-in-law.

Police believe Compton may have been killed in a struggle after interrupting a burglary at his home.

He was a just man who knew right from wrong, said Tim McCoy, also a brother-in-law. He often said 'that's just not right', and he knew something was wrong in this neighborhood on that night. He was protecting his wife and property and this entire neighborhood.

A memorial is growing outside the Compton family home. Family says without the answers they need, there will be no peace.

We just want that much behind us, said Smith. We don't' want to have to wonder every day.
Police have interviewed at least two people of interest in this case but have not named any suspects. If you have any information you're asked to call police, or Crime Stoppers of Tacoma/Pierce County at 253-591-5959. All callers remain anonymous.
