Erik King was understandably confused. A scared little voice was speaking to him from outside his apartment door in the middle of the night.

It was very confusing, he said on Wednesday. It seemed very serious, but she wasn t making sense to me, at first.

It turned out to be a 5-year-old girl, abducted from her bedroom early Saturday morning. She was snatched through the bedroom window of her first floor apartment. The 911 call released Wednesday portrays a situation so surreal, King didn t know what to believe.

What's your name? he asks of the little girl, still outside his door. He then tells the dispatcher, I'm not opening it up, you know. It's 4:00 in the morning.

King now says he thought it might've been some sort of set-up, and feared for the safety of his own 4-year-old son who was asleep inside. I thought maybe someone was coaching her to say these things. It was crazy. I just didn't know.

Earlier in the night a neighbor of the victim called 911 after noticing her bedroom window had been pried open.

It just kind of seemed a little off for me because...I think it's like a 4 year old daughter, and the way that everything's propped up against the window, it doesn't look like a 5 years old would do it, he told the dispatcher.

Police say they were able to piece to case together so quickly because both men followed their instincts, although King wishes he wasn t so suspicious of the scared little girl.
If it was my son, I'd be in absolute panic. I can't even imagine. It chokes me up to think about it, he said.

King, a single father and beauty school student, says the child was incredibly articulate for her age. She told him she thought it was her father who was carrying her away, but then noticed the man was wearing earrings and knew something was wrong. She also told him she knocked at several other doors at his apartment complex, but no one answered.

Police say she ended up about three-quarters of a mile from her home, after having her pajama bottoms stripped off on the Interurban Trail. Police continue searching for a suspect.
