The campaign to legalize same-sex marriage in Washington has raised more than $12.5 million in donations, state records show. R-74 s biggest individual supporter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, contributed $2.5 million, just shy of the entire fundraising for the referendum s opponents.

Contributors to the R-74 effort include New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is another of the large individual donors.

The majority of Washington share the values of love, family and commitment, said Lacey All with Washington United for Marriage. I think you can see that in our fundraising.

Though $12 million is a large amount, it pales in comparison to other recent ballot measures, including last year s initiative to privatize liquor stores, which raised more than $30 million.

We never needed to raise the exact amount of money the other side raised, said Chip White from Preserve Marriage Washington, which is against R-74, We never expected to match the other side dollar for dollar.

White said Sunday those behind same-sex marriage initiatives include multi-national corporations, big conglomerates and billionaires, and touted his grassroots campaign.

The question is whether money raised equals votes on Election Day. All, whose side has more cash, said donations are an indication of support. White believes his campaign has raised enough money to get its message out.
