CALDWELL, Idaho -- A Caldwell man who ran an after-school program for kids and recently ran for city council is now accused of sex crimes against children.

Thursday, police arrested Vincent Sanchez, 29. It was one day after a grand jury handed up an indictment charging him with rape and lewd and lascivious conduct witha minor.

The allegations date back to nearly a decade ago, but prosecutors feel their case is firm and are moving forward.

According to court records, in August of 2001 Sanchez inappropriately touched a 12-year old girl.

The same year from January to August, he's accused of having sex with a 17-year-old girl.

Canyon County Prosecutor John Bujak says one of the victims saw Sanchez as he campaigned for office.

The case came to light as Mr. Sanchez was a candidate for the city council in Caldwell and people came forward reporting these allegations, Bujak said.

Even though the cases are old Bujak says they are within the statute of limitations.

Certainly I think it will be an issue raised in the case but I feel comfortable that I've done the research and the investigation has been done and that we're standing on firm legal ground, Bujak said.

Not only did Sanchez unsuccessfully run for council last year, he threw his name in the hat back in 2007.

Sanchez was also an after-school program director for the Caldwell School District and had direct contact with kids.

He started there in August of 2008 and left this past December.

The school district would not disclose why, saying it's a personnel matter.

He supervised and managed the adults, the instructors, then they worked with the kids, Caldwell School District spokeswoman Jennifer Swindell said.

Sanchez is expected to be back in court Friday.

He is being held at the Canyon County jail on a $50,000 bond.

If he's convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and would have to register as a sex offender.

As of Thursday, he did not have an attorney and we were not able to locate any family for comment.
