AIRWAY HEIGHTS An offender from Airway Heights Corrections Center was killed in a logging accident Monday while working with a Department of Natural Resources work crew in Stevens County.

Danny R. Bergeson, 22, was electrocuted while cutting a small tree near a power line near Springdale. Members of the work crew and medical units performed CPR. Bergeson was pronounced dead at about 12:15 p.m.

Airway Heights has four 10-offenderwork crews that work with the Department of Natural Resources to fight and prevent wildfires, and tree thinning. This is the first fatality or serious injury involving an offender on an Airway Heights work crew.

Bergeson, who was living in a minimum-custody unit, was serving a prison sentence after being convicted in Skagit County of attempting to elude a police vehicle. He was scheduled to complete his prison sentence on Jan. 28, 2013.

The Department of Corrections notified his relatives.

Airway Heights, located near Spokane, houses about 2,200 minimum- and medium-custody offenders.
