Pregnant Over 40

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage. Remember that playground song? These days the baby carriage doesn t come as soon as it used to. More couples are conceiving later in life. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the only age group that posted an increased birth rate in 2009 was women between 40 and 44 years old. More than one percent of those women had babies in 2009, the highest rate since the late 60 s when fewer women worked outside the home.

While pursuit of a career may put off child bearing for some, there is a high risk of complication for pregnant women over 35 including miscarriage, premature delivery, gestational diabetes, bleeding problems, and caesarean sections. But there are also many positives to having children later in life. Older parents may be more mature, financially stable, and better prepared to face the challenges of parenthood.

Happy Meal Backlash

McDonald s Happy Meal is getting an angry response from doctors here in the Northwest and around the nation. The group Corporate Accountability International took out a full page ad in the Portland Tribune asking McDonald s to stop using Ronald McDonald and to stop spending $400,000,000 a year on marketing to kids. The open letter was signed by 16,000 doctors and other health professionals. With more than a third of children in the U.S. overweight or obese, they point the finger at McDonald s for its commercials targeting kids with fatty foods tied to toy giveaways and the Ronald McDonald clown.
