PORTLAND, Ore. -- Mercy Corps, the Portland-based international aid agency, is sending an emergency response assessment team to Haiti and will later send more people based on what type of help is needed.

Mercy Corps spokeswoman Caitlin Carlson told The Oregonian newspaper that the team could leave as early as Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Tigard-based Medical Teams International is sending two teams of doctors and nurses to Haiti along with medical supplies and financial aid.

Tuesday's magnitude-7.0 quake flattened countless buildings in the impoverished country. Officials fear it left hundreds of thousands dead, but there's no firm tally.

The international Red Cross says a third of Haiti's 9 million people may need emergency aid.
