Bainbridge Island officials on Sunday reported a sewage spill into Eagle Harbor near the ferry terminal and they are asking that people and pets stay out of the water.

Shellfish harvesting is already closed. Swimming beaches are closed until further notice.

The break happened at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday while a city contractor was digging to replace the 40-year-old cast iron pipe.

A temporary bypass was set up and the sewage spill to the beach main was stopped by 1:30 p.m.

Crews won t be able to repair the break until Monday morning, when tides are low enough to access the pipe.

The amount of the spill is unknown.
