SPOKANE, Wash.-- Spokane Police officers investigated through the night into Monday morning following a fatal shooting in an affluent neighborhood of Spokane s South Hill.

Officers were called to the shooting near 25th and S. Garfield Sunday evening. When they arrived, police found at a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound on the ground floor of his home.

Sources tell KREM 2's crime and court reporter Hayley Guenthner the victim was shot at multiple times. Sources said he was found in the rear area of the house and his wife is the one who called 911.

Sources told Guenthner the victim's wife hid in a closet upstairs of the home while officers responded. Sources add the wife reported to police six shots were fired toward her husband.

Detectives said early Monday that it was too early to tell whether the victim knew the suspect or whether his death was the result of an altercation following a home invasion. A K9 unit was brought in but authorities were unable to locate the suspect.

Neighborswere shockedwhen they heard the news of the shooting. Nobody heard anything. When I came home, I went out to ask what was going on and I could smell gunpowder in the air, said one neighbor.

This kind of stuff just doesn't happen in our neighborhood. It is such a peaceful, quiet neighborhood, always has been, said a different neighbor. Those close with the victim and his wife asked KREM 2 not to identify neighbors so they could protect the victim's identity.

It wasn't until about 6:30 a.m. that the medical examiner could remove the body from the home.

Police were expected to beat nearHutton Elementary SchoolMonday as long as the investigation was active. Officers said there was possible evidence in the park near the school. As a precaution, extra security guards were expected to be at the school.

Those close to the victim said he and his wife owned a construction company and moved to Spokane a few years ago from Moses Lake. Theyadded the couple kept mostly to themselves but saidthe home was family oriented; family came and went often. They reportedly have several grandchildren.
