PORTLAND-- Recent staffing changes at the Oregon Zoo were related to the death of the zoo's Sumatran Orangutan Kutai, Metro announced Thursday.

The zoo announced earlier this week that Kim Smith, who had served as zoo director since 2010, was replaced. Veterinarian Mitch Finnegan also left.

Kutai died in January, following an illness. He was 20 years old.

  • There was a lack of trust regarding the accuracy of reports and whether important facts regarding animal care were omitted.
