Video: PSE rebates helping customers save money

Does your home feel drafty in the winter? If it does, there's a good chance your house needs some insulation.

Now, more people are taking advantage of insulation upgrades. The upgrades can not only save money on your heating bill, it also adds value to your home.

Puget Sound Energy is offering extensive rebates to help you add insulation, and there is a lot of interest in it right now. In the past year, they've seen a 50% increase in the number of people taking advantage of their rebates.

If your walls could talk, they might tell you they're cold - which is why one homeowner is injecting the walls with a blanket of insulation. The attic is getting the thermal treatment too.

"As of tomorrow everything is going to change in their house as far as comfort goes," said Bill Taylor, Puget Sound Energy.

And the cost of getting it done is comfy too.

That's because Puget Sound Energy offers up to $1,600 in instant rebates to pay part of the cost to insulate your home. They'll give you $400 each for floors, attics and walls, and $200 off the cost of sealing or insulating the ducts.

Once that's done, you'll see savings on your heating bill because the furnace just won't have to work as hard.

"Let's say it usually runs 60 minutes to get up to temperature. It will probably run in this situation about 25% less," said Brian Butz, Einar Johanson Insulation.

The work on one particular home costs a total of $2,800. PSE is paying one thousand dollars of that. In the end, it's money the homeowner will eventually recoup in lower power bills, not to mention a better well-being.

"It makes us feel good when the homeowner calls back and says 'Hey, I feel so much better in my house already,'" said Taylor.

How do you know if your house is a good candidate? If your home was built before 1980, it probably is.

In order to take advantage of the program, you need to use an independent contractor authorized by PSE. for more information.
