MOSCOW-- The University of Idaho has fired head football coach Robb Akey, athletic director Rob Spear announced Sunday afternoon.

The news comes one day after the Vandals fell to 1-7 on the season, most recently losing 70-28 on the road at Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

The President (Duane Nellis) and I believe it is important to make this move now so we can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for the 2013 season, Spear said Sunday. We appreciate Coach Akey s enthusiasm and dedication to the University of Idaho but this is the right move at this time.

Hired in 2007 to stabilize a football program in turmoil, Akey compiled a record of 20-50. His best season came in 2009 when the Vandals went 8-5 and beat Bowling Green in the Humanitarian Bowl.

Spear said that the search for Akey s replacement will begin immediately.

In the meantime, first-year offensive coordinator Jason Gesser has been named interim head coach. Gesser has been on the Vandal staff for the past two seasons.

Akey s contract, which expires in December of 2014, has a base salary of $165,796.
