PORTLAND - Organizers with Clean Water Portland announced Thursday afternoon that they now have gathered 20,000 signatures in the effort to force a public vote over the decision to begin fluoridating Portland s water supply.

Last month, the Portland City Council voted unanimously to add fluoride to the city's water supply by 2014.

Opponents of that decision say they hope to gather at least 30,000 total signatures to ensure they have 20,000 valid ones by the deadline at the end of next week.
