In an effort to prevent distracted driving, the Washington State Patrol will be increasing patrols for the next two weeks as part of its Click it or Ticket campaign.

In addition to tackling cell phone use while driving, troopers will be citing drivers for not wearing their seat belts.

The timing comes as more drivers will hit the road for the busy Memorial Day holiday.

Most drivers still aren't getting the message, said Trooper Mark Francis.

During the same emphasis last year, officers on routine and extra patrols statewide stopped 11,047 drivers and issued 3,171 seat belt tickets.

In Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom and Island Counties, 71 additional troopers will be on the roads. The extra patrols are also part of Target Zero, a statewide effort to prevent traffic deaths and serious injuries on the roads by 2030.
