ABERDEEN, Wash. -- Kurt Cobain may not have been a role model, but is influence on music deserves respect, according to Aberdeen Mayor Bill Simpson.
Simpson proclaimed February 20, Cobain's birthday, Kurt Cobain Day in Aberdeen.
We should have done this a whole heckuva long time ago, said Simpson.
The city honored Nirvana'sfront-man with a proclamation and the unveiling of a statue of Cobain. The statue will be on display at the Aberdeen Museum of History.
Cobain killed himself in April of 2004. He publicly struggled with a heroin addiction.
Yeah they [Nirvana] weren't the best people, said Simpson, I'm not either.
Simpson has received complaints about memorializingCobain, but said the city is honoring the rock star and his band.
To show the respect they deserve as being a part of our community, he said.
