SEATTLE -- A man accused of breaking into a Shoreline apartment and raping a 12-year-old girl pleaded not guilty to charges against him Wednesday.
Jesse R. Gonzales, 37, remains in custody at the King County Jail on first degree rape and burglary charges.
Police said Gonzales broke into the apartment on the 20000 block of Whitman Avenue North around 3:30 a.m. on December 4.
Officers said the victim's mother came home from work, scaring the man away.
Gonzales was arrested a few days later using what police said was forensic evidence gathered from the apartment, including a palm print.
According to court documents, Gonzales claimed he was under the influence of 12 beers and a hallucinogenic drug.
Because the victim is under 15-years-old, prosecutors said a guilty conviction would carry a mandatory 25-year sentence.
