GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. -- Rescuers on Mt. Hood Sunday recovered the body of a 25-year-old snowboarder who died after getting trapped under feet of ice after a tunnel collapsed Saturday afternoon.
The Hood River Sheriff s Office identified the man as Collin Backowski from Pine, Colo.
Backowski and five friends were scouting places to take video footage and pictures on the White River Glacier.
Around 4 p.m., Backowski got ahead of the group by about 30 or 40 feet as they were walking through a naturally-formed ice tunnel.
Then, an ice chunk about the size of a school bus came crashing down on him.
Late Saturday night, crews used tools to break apart overhangs and make conditions much safer for rescuer as they meticulously worked with ice axes and chainsaws to get to Backowski's body.
His body was reached at about 8:45 a.m. Sunday under around 10 feet of snow and ice.
The other five snowboarders got off the mountain safely.
