KELSO, Wash. -- Deputies scuffled with a man Wednesday after he aggressively helped himself to a birthday cake brought into the Cowlitz County courthouse.
For the most part it's pretty quiet in here, said Gary Hooper, who runs a cafe in the courthouse lobby, You'll hear people grumbling when they come out of court but that's understandable.
What is not understandable is what happened Tuesday. Tina Ghee and her sister carried a pink box with a birthday cake through the security checkpoint.
We had a little dog in the car and he would've ate it, said Tina Ghee. We thought it would be safe to bring it in with us.
Moments after Ghee and her sister set the boxed up cake on a table, a man with an apparent sweet tooth zeroed in on it.
Next thing you know he turns around and grabs a hand full of it and he starts eating it and he walks away, said Ghee.
The guy was so bold he returned for seconds. Deputies were not amused.
He walked back over, he scooped again, and the police tackle him, Ghee said, And that's when the table breaks. Cake goes flying, and he goes flying. The cops are on top of him. It was crazy.
Hooper watched the scuffle from his cafe. He quickly recognized the hungry man as one of his customers who had exhibited bizarre behavior in the past.
Ordered a sandwich and started eating it and he says, 'I don't have money,' said Hooper.
The man faces theft charges. The local Safeway store made a second cake free of charge.
I've never seen anything like this in my life, said Ghee.
