SALEM -- Father's Day will always be difficult for the family of Marion County Deputy Kelly Fredinburg. He was killed in the line of duty six years ago while responding to another officer in distress.
The driver of a car that crossed the center line, causing a fatal head on collision is still on the run and is believed to be in Mexico.
Someone knows where he is and we have a $20,000 reward that is payable here or in Mexico, said Kevin Fredinburg, the brother of the fallen deputy.
Alfredo De Jesus-Ascencio was behind the wheel that night and was seriously injured in the fiery crash. His cousin, Oscar Ascencio-Amaya, died in the crash. After three weeks in a hospital, Alfredo fled before he was indicted.
Authorities believe he's in Mexico.
I think our local investigators are getting shut off by officials in Mexico, said Fredinburg. There's so much politics involved right now.
That's why Kevin created the Oregon Officer Reward Fund.
The fugitive's brothers and sisters are in Oregon and he'll get much better treatment here than in Mexico, said Fredinburg. $20,000 to his family is a win-win situation.
