SPOKANE, Wash. -- Police received a report that a man identifying himself as a police officer, is calling people trying to collect money for a red light ticket. Authorities said this is not a legitimate phone call.

Authorities said when the suspect called the victim, he told the victim that he/she had a red light camera ticket they had not paid. The suspect said the victim had a warrant for not paying the ticket and they needed to send money to avoid going to jail.

Police said red light tickets are civil infractions and do not go to warrant. Unpaid tickets go to collections and the vehicle registration for the person with the unpaid ticket may not be renewed.

Anyone who receives a similar call is urged to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
