PONDERAY, Idaho -- The Lake Pend Oreille School Board is considering arming teachers.

The proposal listed that some staff, including teachers, could be trained and armed. Those in favor of the proposal said it is designed to prevent school shootings from happening.

The Lake Pend Oreille School Board Chairman Steve Youngdahl decided to take action following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary last year. Youngdahl wants to selectively train and arm teachers and staff who wish to carry guns.

The School Board Chairman s proposal comes after months of research into how schools in the Lake Pend Oreille District could be better protected. The district is currently in the process of improving locks and security at all the schools. Youngdahl said arming teachers is the last piece of the puzzle.

You know all these shootings, with the exception of one, they all happen in gun free zones. And it s because they re easy targets. They re called soft targets. And we want to harden the targets, said Youngdahl.

Youngdahl said he has received an overwhelmingly positive response to the idea. He contends that the idea of arming school staff could prevent the next school shooting.

The School Board is taking public comment on the proposal before putting it into place.

Youngdahl said he is not in a hurry to get the proposal through and they will take as much time as needed.
