SEATTLE -- The 2013 road construction season begins for Seattle. The work will help prevent cracking concrete and pesky potholes. It could also bring some slow downs, starting this weekend in West Seattle.

The burgers and shakes brought in the business Friday night at Luna Park Cafe, but workers worry about the weekend. Hostess Caitlin Dolan is frustrated because two ramps to West Seattle will be closed this weekend while the restaurant will be open.

We don't want to miss business just because ramps are closing, said Dolan.

At Avalon Glassworks next door, owners Jon and Shannon Felix have similar concerns.

Business primarily happens on the weekends, said Jon Felix.

His customers might encounter some gridlock because Friday at 10 p.m. the ramp from southbound I-5 to the West Seattle Bridge and the ramp from westbound Columbian Way to the West Seattle Bridge will close. The ramps are not expected to reopen until Monday at 5 a.m.

The West Seattle closures are just the beginning. Between January and April, the Washington State Department of Transportation has nearly $30 million worth of construction projects planned. Next month crews will grind and smooth three lanes along I-5 in the University district and work on the old State Route 99 bridge over Spokane Street. Also expect to see workers making improvements along northbound I-5 to the West Seattle Bridge.

The construction work will happen on weekends, and drivers will need to be ready for closures.

It makes me not want to leave. It makes me want to stay in West Seattle, said Shannon Felix who added that she hopes her local regulars stay in West Seattle to shop too.

Detours for this weekend in West Seattle.
