PORTLAND New Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is wasting no time in establishing a firm tone against gun violence.
Last week, Hales joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and organization of around 800 mayors in the United States calling on the President and Congress to act on the illegal use of firearms across the county.
On Monday, Hales is set to address gun violence from his office at City Hall. The day also marks the one-month anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
We have to get angry. And we have to stay angry, Hales said in a news release to KGW. Gun violence is not acceptable. We need action now.
The group, which includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is calling on Congress to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require background checks for all gun sales, and make gun trafficking federal crime.
The advocacy group will also be releasing a new television ad featuring family members of gun violence.
