GLADSTONE, Ore. -- A truck sunk into the Willamette River near Gladstone Wednesday night, as the couple with the truck tried to escape to shore, according to Clackamas County firefighters.
Witnesses told KGW News on scene the man and his girlfriend had driven to a sandbar at Meldrum Bar Park. The water level raised quickly around 5pm, and the two tried to swim to shore with their two dogs.
A fisherman saw the people struggling in the water and was able to reach the woman and pull her safely into his boat. He said the woman was moments from going under the water. The man disappeared below the surface before he could get to him.
Rescue boats and divers searched the river but did not locate the male victim or the truck. The search ended for the night but will resume Thursday morning at 7am.
It's believed the two chocolate Laborador Retrievers with the couple made it safely to shore.
