MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- The victim of a violent kidnapping in Milwaukie on Monday managed to escape, but the suspect has not been caught, police said.

The kidnapper abducted the woman from her work and shoved her into his van, according to Lt. Robert Wurpes of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Just minutes earlier, the victim had reportedly been at her place of employment on Hwy 99, Wurpes said. While she was working alone, the suspect walked into the business, physically assaulted her, and forced her outside and into what is described as a purple-colored minivan.

The terrified woman managed to escape by jumping out of the moving vehicle. She was seriously injured but neighbors found her in the roadway and called police. She was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

She fought back. And that's admirable, Wurpes said. It worked in this case, you know, never give up.

Fellow employees in the strip mall where it happened, near Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard and Southeast Rothe Road, were shaken by the event and said they don't feel safe at work.

Its really scary. I mean, my brother brought me mace today, said an employee at a nearby shop. It really makes me think of going and getting my gun handlers permit. It s just scary that it s so close to home.

The suspect was described as a 50-year-old man with a full head of gray hair and possibly a goatee or beard. He was wearing wire-rimmed glasses, dark pants and a navy blue hooded jacket, Wurpes said.

Anyone with information about the kidnapping is asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office's confidential tip line at 503-723-4949, or submit a tip here.

Stranger-on-stranger abductions are extremely rare, and detectives are taking this case very seriously, Wurpes added. It is an open and ongoing investigation.
