WASHOUGAL, Wash. -- An arrest has been made in the case of a cat deliberately run over last week in Washougal.

Anonymous tips led to the arrest of the 17-year-old, said Commander Allen Cook.

He was taken into custody Wednesday on an accusation of first-degree animal cruelty and released to his parents.

Witnesses reported seeing a late model white Ford SUV speeding down H Street just after midnight last Friday, Cook said.

The Ford drove up on the curb and ran over a cat that just crossed the street. Witnesses heard a male voice shouting 'hit it, hit!

As the cat lay dying, the SUV with several teens returned twice to look at the dying cat.

The 17-year-old arrested said he did not intend to hit the cat and was trying to avoid it, Cook said. He did explain why he did not stay on the road or veer in the opposite direction.

The case will be turned over Clark County Juvenile Court. The owner of the cat has not been identified.
