PORTLAND -- A Portland couple said a Broadway Cab driver kicked them out of a taxi because the women are gay. Now the city of Portland and the cab company are investigating the incident.

Kate Neal said she, her girlfriend, and another friend used Broadway Cab to get home Thursday night. She said they left from downtown Portland and were in the cab about 15 minutes when the cab driver yelled at the couple.

The cab driver saw us being affectionate and took offense to that. He started shouting really hurtful, mean and really homophobic remarks at us. We really didn't feel safe in the cab, Neal said.

At that point, Neal said the driver pulled over on the side of Interstate 84 near Northeast 102nd Avenue. She said a second Broadway Cab appeared to pick them up. A short time later, Neal said the new driver also refused to take them home.

I feel sad. I feel vulnerable. It was a very humiliating experience. I'm a little angry obviously and I feel bad. I feel sad for the cab driver really, she said.

Neal said the three women had to climb a fence next to the highway and walk into a neighborhood to figure out a way home. That's where they found a Portland police officer.

Neal said the officer explained he was there on a call regarding women who refused to pay a fare. When Neal explained what happened, the officer took the women home.

KGW left multiple messages with Broadway Cab. So far, our calls have not been answered. The cab company posted a message on its Facebook page.

We are investigating this incident. The city of Portland has also opened their own independent investigation and Broadway Cab is cooperating fully with them. We celebrate diversity every day. Discrimination should not, cannot and will not be tolerated, the statement says in part.

In the Facebook message Broadway Cab says it suspended at least one of the drivers involved while the company looks into the matter. Kate Neal said she was told the cab company is also reviewing videotape of the cab ride in question.
