A construction worker was hurt when a furnace exploded in a home in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, setting off a fire that destroyed the home and spread to three others.

The worker was inside the home, working on a furnace when it exploded. The worker was taken to the Harborview Medical Center with burns.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Several other homes also caught fire.

Neighbors say the family had moved out of the house while work was being done on it.

The fire was visible from Kirkland and the SR 520 bridge, and the smoke could be seen for miles.

Sarah Meyer, who lives near the home, said her house shook.

Francine Dionne said she and her husband were sailing on Lake Washington and heard an explosion. Black smoke started within 5 minutes, she said.
