AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -- Thousands of people in Airway Heights hoped to break a world record Saturday night for the largest water balloon fight.

Volunteers spent all of Saturday afternoon filling up tens of thousands of balloons at the Spokane County Raceway.

Event organizers said they needed 200,000 balloons to break the world record. Kentucky University broke the record in 2011 when 8,900 people threw more than 100,000 water balloons.

Unfortunately, only 6,700 people showed up Saturday putting them 2,200 people shy of the record.
